Fishing Ethics and Safety

Code of Angling Ethics

Ethics cannot be dictated. Angling ethics develop with time, experience and interaction with others. The following code is offered as a guideline to increase awareness and encourage discussion.

An Ethical Angler:

  • Understands fishing and boating regulations.
  • Cares about aquatic and marine habitats.
  • Keeps only fish they will eat, and properly releases the rest.
  • Is respectful of others - anglers and non-anglers alike.
  • Leaves no trash, even if left by others.
  • Shares expertise with less experienced anglers.
  • Cooperates with authorities.
  • Fishes and boats safely.
  • Preserves the sportfishing tradition.

Fishing Safety Tips

  • In selecting a waterfront site, be sure that the area is free from underwater hazards, clean and, if necessary, large enough to accommodate everyone in your group.
  • Inspect waterfronts daily - the natural environment is subject to change without notice.
  • When choosing a site for fishing, always consider safety factors. Because fishing is practiced in a variety of environments, evaluate factors specific to safety in each environment.
  • Weather is always a factor. Set up a weather committee or rotate weather forecasting responsibilities. Carry a transistor National Weather Service radio.
  • Always wear footgear appropriate to the conditions.
  • Stay dry, warm, and protected from the elements. Wear a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. Wear thin layers of clothing, and progress outward to include water and wind protection as the final layer.
  • Use appropriate insect protection measures, including dressing properly and using repellents.
  • Keep fishing knives sharp and cover the blade when not in use.
  • Handle fish carefully.
  • Use safety glasses at all times when casting.
  • Establish and enforce firm rules for behavior around hooks.

Fishing Knot - Albright knot

Uses: The Albright Knot is used to join monofilaments with different diameters. It is commonly used to join the fly line to the fly-reel backing line. It is well suited to slide readily through the guides when a fish pulls enough to reach your backing.

Tying it: It is important to wind the loops neatly round the loop of larger line. Hold the loops under your fingers as you wind the line on.

Advantages: The Albright is relatively smooth and passes through guides when required. Some anglers coat the knot with a rubber based cement to make it even smoother and more secure.

Saturday Mac 7th 2009, 0400hrs - We woke up as early as 4am in the morning. Soon after a cup of a hot coffee, we transfer all the equipments into the boat. In chorus, the anchorman’s warming up the engine. The sound of the roaring engine was so pleasant!! As much as necessary to blaze off the spirits! We had a quick hot shower and prayer, in next to no time everyone was on the boat ready to take off!!! The breakfast was served on the boat during the journey! We never taste the nasi lemak and coffee as delicious as this one. Thanks Pok Mat….

We would like to express our gratitude and thank you to all members on contributing to the accomplishment of the trip. Even though, we didn’t run into Grouper, Red Snapper, Sweetlip Emperor and Parrot fish as what we had planned earlier. Somehow, the bottom fishing was not too successful at this time. We hope next time in the future the boat service should provide GPS and Sonar on each boat. Most significantly, they must have range of the first-rate spots to go. We have wasted a lot of time to budge around here and there to find a nice spot. This is going to happen if we don’t have Sonar for guidance. All comments and ideas are most welcome to improve our fishing trip in the future. Kudos!
